Sometimes you do things for others expecting some kind of acknowledgement or reward and then feel lousy when it’s not forthcoming. Why do you feel unappreciated? What are your motives for doing what you do for others… so they can praise you or because you really think they can do with your help?
We sometimes help others to convince them of our value, not because we are altruistic in our support. That kind of behavior is a true recipe for disappointment. Help others because you want to, because you can do for them what they can’t do for themselves. And feel happy YOU can. That should be reward enough.
So next time you plan to help a friend, a relative, an acquaintance, assess your motives and make sure you’re doing it because you want to so as to avoid feeling bad if there’s not a clear expression of gratitude.
Enjoy life, J.
